And yes, a reminder...if you have a tv or connected device at all, you can watch the Series. This one thing MLB will allow those of us who didn't buy the package. So watch it! Though since it features the two best starting pitching staffs in MLB, it might be a little boring. Still, any of them could falter, Cy Young candidates and past winners or no. And the hitting on both teams is nothing to sneeze at. So who knows, might be some barnburner games.

And the Fall Classic is underway, with the surprising Nationals now leading the heavily, (way too heavily IMO) favored Astros, 1-0. Great game too, one of those nail-biters that isn't over until the final pitch, if you get the meaning. Weird outing for the heretofore unbeatable Cole, rocking him for two solo shots and five total runs; this for a guy who almost never gives up a single run. Second game is tonight at the same start time on Fox. Sadly, I won't be able to watch a game between two of my favorite teams on my birthday tomorrow, which is evidently a travel day before they resume with three games in Washington. Also...is it just me, or does the Nationals' "W" logo look a whole lot like Walgreens drugstore's "W" logo? Walgreens: Washington Nationals' logo:

A bit of background on the Nationals, a somewhat confusing team. First off, they are the former Montreal Expos, moved to Washington. You may also have heard that they are the first team from Washington to play in the Series since 1933 when the Washington Senators did. One of the Washington Senator teams, there were several unrelated teams by that name in the capitol over the years, ending in the 60s or 70s IIRC.

One down, three to go. Finish the fight!

I did think that introducing the home team, (Astros), to the strains of The Avengers theme was perhaps a bit much; left me wondering who Iron Man was, Altuve?

Worth noting that Springer for the Astros did in fact dog it once, when he hit what he obviously thought was going to be a home run...and stood to admire it for a few beats before noting that it was not in fact going to be a home run...which is when he finally started running. Turned what might have been a triple into a double. A long fly later, and if he HAD been on third, he might have scored...giving them a tie. He did get a record though, most consecutive WS games with a home run, 5.

Seems to me the Nats just want this more, and are giving it absolutely everything they've got, while the Astros, having won...well, one WS just a couple of years back, don't seem to want it quite as much. And that, coupled with the first game road win, IMO shift the odds to the Nats' favor. It actually IS a game where that almost cliche but mostly true old movie saw about wanting to win can play out. So here's my first clear call, Nats. Heart, desire, hustle, whatever you want to call it, that's what the Nats so far at least seem to have over the Astros. Dodgers too for that matter.

2-2 after one inning in the 2nd game. Both these teams are putting on a show!

2-2 after one inning in the 2nd game. Both these teams are putting on a show! Damn, they are psychic! Pregame had the color guys, (including a happily healed Big Papi), talking about Bregman, saying he wasn't doing anything and needed to. He must have been listening.

Nationals have opened things up in the 7th! 8-2 with two outs. They finally knocked Verlander out of the game and then knocked his relief out of the game.

Nationals have opened things up in the 7th! 8-2 with two outs. They finally knocked Verlander out of the game and then knocked his relief out of the game. And IIRC the final score was 11-2 or something similar. Again, I thought the Nats just wanted it more. Verlander seemed genuinely thrown at the start, and the Astros defense suddenly seemed like they subcontracted the Dodgers for that role. A comedy of errors, (literally). Springer for example seemed to just give up on plays. There was a bit where another near home run came, and he watched it hit above his head, but still inside, and didn't play for the bounce but just watched it and gave up on it. So, Nats are up 2-0, with today a travel day, (damn, last year my birthday was also a travel day in the Series, will I never get a game on this day). There will follow three games at the Nats, if necessary. Again I'm going to call it for the Nats, either in a sweep, or in seven. Looking more and more like a sweep. The Astros will be starting Greinke, their third best starter...but also a good hitter, (for a pitcher), with three round trippers this season with the D-Backs, and he'll be pitching at a National League park, which means no DH, and that the pitchers must hit. So he's a good fit for the situation, and could hardly do worse than the Astros two aces. We'll see.
