So, it was KC vs the Nats yesterday, and the Nats did something almost unheard of; they stole home. Actually, it was a double delayed steal attempt, with a guy on first going for second, or rather sacrificing himself so the guy on third could steal home. A matter of timing I should think as to whether it was a fielder's choice force out, or a guy caught stealing then a guy who made it.

The Angels' catcher was put out of last night's game after a brutal collision at home. Yes, the runner was called out for going out of his way to make the collision, which was a head to head thing. Just a brutal hit. Jonathan Lucroy was hospitalized for concussion and probably whiplash checks, (a CAT scan from personal experience, plus probably wearing a cervical collar for a night or so. Houston’s Jake Marisnick, as I said was called out and his run was disallowed. Probably a heat of the moment thing, as prior to this the Astros have behaved in an exemplary manner, (well, this season).

So the 2019 MLB All-Star Game is in the books, and it was a fine one. Beiber of the hometown Indians was the MVP for striking out the side. The players on both teams wore number 45 on their jerseys as a patch in honor of Angels' pitcher Tyler Skaggs, and observed a moment of silence in his honor before the anthem. AL kept it's streak alive with a one run win. Nice bit where they mic'ed up several players including Captain Marvel Jr. for the Braves, the best first baseman in the game, and he turned out to be pretty funny.

I haven't seen one of those games in years, and I thought it was alright. It didn't seem to be too big of a deal from a competitive side. The live mics were a nice touch, especially when Freeman was joking that he was going to get a hit because of the live mic (he didn't).

Yeah, the All-Star Game is never going to be a competitive gem, but rather a showcase of the best in baseball playing what for them is a fun game that they don't especially care about. Well, not all of them, anyway. But it was fun in that sense. The mics were a nice touch; and they've done it before, but they should keep with it in that game IMO, especially with players like Freeman who have proved they can be entertaining.

When the live mics get used for guys in the dugout, it can lead to some fun conversations. I'm not sure that a live mic would work in a tense game moment, though.

Which is why it's perfect for the All-Star Game; there aren't any tense moments. And to be honest, there are fewer of those in baseball than most other sports anyway; it's just too laid-back.

Robot Umpires?Color me unhappy. Not a fan of the idea, as I'm not a fan of replays to decide calls, or not throwing those four balls on intentional walks...

So it was the Angels' first game at home since Tyler Skaggs died in Texas during the road trip. It was...well, weird. To start with, it was a no-hitter for the Angels, the 11th in their history, though two pitchers combined for it. They had a 7 run first inning and finished with 13. That is of course today's date, Skaggs' birthday. Every Angel wore his number 45 Skaggs jersey, as did his mom, wife, and a couple of other relatives, and his mom threw out the first pitch to his best friend on the team, the catcher. Trout hit his AL leading 29th home run in the first, (I think Yelich is still at his major league leading 31, with Bellinger at 30 unless yesterday's games changed things). You can read more and watch the tribute, (wherein they also laid a boatload of Skaggs 45 jerseys on the mound at the end of the game), at the link. www.yahoo.com/sports/angels-take-the-field-wearing-tyler-skaggs-no-45-jersey-during-emotional-tribute-021808154.html

Not only was that fairy tale game yesterday the best the Angels have probably ever played in a single game...but they were only one walk away from a perfect game. In any case, a one walke no-hitter is a pretty good deal for 'em.

Sadly Cards' great and HOFer Bob Gibson (83 years old) has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. No more details at this time.

I caught a brief glimpse of MLB’s YouTube game, today. One of the big draws is the live chat involving team reps, an MLB rep, and various YouTubers. Presentation looks to be similar to MLB Network’s stuff. I’m hoping to get to see the Blue Jays/Indians game next week on the platform.

No. No politics in baseball! I don't care what kind of politics, the press needs to stop. I want to be able to like and admire MLB players without having to deal with some writer's political beliefs. And I don't care if that writer has the same political beliefs as I do, I don't want to hear it; baseball should be sacrosanct. www.foxnews.com/media/mariano-rivera-hall-of-fame-donald-trump-mlb-baseball-hall-of-fame-daily-beastAnd this case seems egregious; the writer is pissed that Rivera, famously closed mouthed about anything outside of baseball, is a Christian, and worse, one who supports Israel. Who cares? I could care less if he's Christian, Buddhist, or is into whatever the proper name for voodoo is. Hell, the movie Major League gave us the Allstate guy as a voodoo slugger....and he was great! Everyone rooted for him, making his big moment all the bigger. And Israel? I could care less whether or not he supports them. Makes no difference to me. That's part of the beauty of baseball; its a laid-back sport that's all about fun. Nothing else should intrude, other than real life tragedies, such as the death of Angels' pitcher Skaggs in the recent road trip, (they held his memorial service today, an off day for the Angels, one attended not only by the team, but by major leaguers from around the league---another plus of MLB---they all know each other and are friends. And it doesn't care what race, religion, or politics you have, something society at large fails at). For background, Rivera is considered the greatest closer, (short relief pitcher meant to pitch an inning or so at the end of the game, hopefully to preserve a lead), in history, and was being inducted into the Hall of Fame. Some assclown thought that was the perfect time to publish a rant against Rivera's religious beliefs and politics.
