Outbreak, Or, How Screwed Are We?The answer of course is...we are SO screwed. Alternate title, "Thanks, China!" This all came about, and it's now shaping up to be a possible pandemic, because of something Prince Phillip once observed about the Chinese, going something like "If it has four legs and isn't a table, the Chinese will eat it, if it flies in the air and isn't an airplane, the Chinese will eat it, and if it swims in the sea and isn't a submarine, the Chinese will eat it". Funny, and certainly a bit racist, but it points to a truth about sundry Chinese food cultures. Basically, they do eat anything, (my brother did a semester abroad there and got treated to what he described as an "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" style feast, so disgusting to Western palates as to have all the Americans desperate for a McDonalds. I leave you at snake blood and bile cocktails, snake, scorpion...sorry, not on my "to eat" list. The problem is something called "wet markets", wherein tens of thousands of basically everything that lives in Asia of any kind of animal, are crowded into markets where they are often kept alive and in close proximity to animals they never should be next to. It is the world's most perfect setup for creating plagues, and it's happened before with SARS and other flu-like and lethal illnesses. It allows viruses already in certain animals to mutate and cross species boundaries, to humans. It isn't a starvation deal, the Chinese by and large have plenty to eat, (and it's a common practice throughout Asia, but most prevalent in China, in provincial capitals), it's a cultural deal. One that the Party seems unwilling to stop. So...in sum, try not to breath in public... That article BTW...that's MY home turf that just got a confirmed case...not surprising as there's a huge Chinese community here. A large Japanese community. Which means Chinese markets and Japanese markets. The differences? Hygiene for one. Sorry, but every Chinese market I've visited has...stunk. And looked dirty, with fish swimming in dirty green water. You can eat of the floors of most of the Japanese markets I've been too. How we keep animals to be used for food, and what animals we keep, (bushmeat animals like those in the Ebola outbreaks in Africa, and in the wet markets in China and Asia are just too dangerous to keep like that or come in close contact to at all----civets and bats being looked at hard in this case). Hopefully, this burns itself out before hurting too many people, but it doesn't look like it, some 58 deaths reported so far, and reason to believe it's far higher than that. Worryingly, it is contagious before you even know you have it.

It's a shock. Jim Hill is on the news and is pretty broken up about it. He used his chopper regularly.

Not a good time to own Boeing stock.
Makes me wonder about Boeing's future. I live in North Charleston, SC and several years back they built a plant here. What will happen if they shut it down.

At least NPR is standing with their female report in the Pompeo fracas from last Friday.
