This seems like the right thread for this question. First, while I've played the odd videogame or so, I'm not a gamer, and know nothing about which games are good, and which platforms are the best. So...which system and essential three games should I get, recalling that I'm an utter novice at it?

I have a hard time with questions like this since I rarely like really popular games and play more chill games. Any games in the past you used to like you think you still might like?

I've kind of played a variety of things, those world building things, some first person shooters, (Doom, and a couple of others...so that's been awhile), and stuff like football and baseball games. I have wondered a bit about if I'd like something a bit more modern though, like the GTA stuff or whatever the big one is now. I don't really even know what's out there in terms of platforms and games, or what the relative merits of each console, (which is what I'm looking at), actually are.

I'm a one platform guy (Nintendo Switch), so my view is limited.
I think currently the big player is the PlayStation. Probably has the biggest library and most support.
XBox though probably has the best service, but it is for pay. You can get a large variety games as part of that service that you can try out.
Those two probably have the larger variety and are more modern. Of course, both are due for a refresh this holiday with the Playstation 5 and the Xbox series X. The question then is do you want to hop on to a brand new system or buy an older one with an established library. If you don't care about online and if you want a cheaper experience, then maybe consider getting the current gen. Maybe watch last year's sony state of play or E3 and Microsoft's E3 presentation so you can see games being offerred today or soon.

Thanks, I think I'll try that watching those and see which I like better.

Thanks, I think I'll try that watching those and see which I like better. There is also the realm of PC gaming, but that is sort of a different beast. And intense. However, more console games are showing up there nowadays.
Let us know what you think after watching!

I'm not sold on the designs yet, but I like the idea. I think it is just for the PS4…

Thanks, I think I'll try that watching those and see which I like better. I'm a three platform guy (Nintendo Switch, X-Box & PC), so my view is a bit larger. I've had Playstations 1, 2 & 3 and when it was time to get the next gen I did a lot of research and found there really wasn't much difference except but for the games exclusive to each console. I made my mind up because I liked the (then) upcoming Xbox only Cuphead game (which is on all consoles now) and from that and the old Outhouse's video game friend list thread we used to have had more Xboxers than PS4ers. I've enjoyed the Xbox a lot so I think I'm siding with Microsoft in this Novembers console war.
