I know it is very early in the season, but the Red Sox look terrible right now. Yep, don't know what's wrong with them, or the Yankees. The Rockies, one of my favs, are also stinking up the place.

Yeah, this one had a lot of baseball writers talking after the end of last season. It's evidently one of those arcane rules MLB has that are intended to screw over the newer talent in favor of the vets. He should rightly have had his rookie season last year, but a matter of a relatively few games would have made him eligible sooner for free agency. Seriously complicated and rather boring, but that's at the heart of why he wasn't having his rookie season last year, and it also affects other similarly situated players. On another note, MLB.com's free game of the day yesterday was entertaining. KC vs TB Rays, KC winning. There was one of those fun, kooky double plays that took around thirty seconds to develop, with the catcher looking like he wasn't going to make the tag in a rundown to home, but he finally did and then threw out the guy at second.

So, saw Vladimir Guerrero Jr.'s MLB big league debut yesterday AT Toronto, where he plays for the Jays, against the A's. He is of course the biggest prospect in years for MLB, and the son of the HOFer. He went 1 for 4, with his hit being a double in his final at-bat, and represented the winning run. He was then pulled for a pinch runner who scored on a walk-off HR by another player. But damn the expectations for him are HUGE! The crowd was large for a weekday game, and cheering every little thing he did, and booing called balls like I've never seen.
I'm hoping he lives up to his hype, based on who he is and his performance in the minors, which he tore up. A few general observations about him. He's a disciplined hitter who doesn't swing on pitches he doesn't like and is willing to work the pitcher for a walk. And he seems to have power...a lot of it. Two of his outs were warning track outs...but it remains to be seen if he can convert those to actual HRs over the long haul. Beyond that, there was nothing to tell from his first appearance, other than that he's got the weight of a city on his back. It'll be great for the sport if he does live up to the hype.

So, in the Dodger game last night I saw a man throwing up in the bullpen, and watched another fly out to centerfield, and without a cape! What other sport can show you those sights?!?!
I should explain to those who don't know, here in the LA/OC area we can't watch Dodger or Angel games on free TV, you need to buy a package...for each, or buy MLB's package in some fashion. But, our local channel KTLA broadcasts ten Dodger game a season, and that was one of them. They beat the Pirates BTW to stay in the NL West lead, (actually, they're tied for the Major's best record with the Mariners IIRC). Bellinger is the hottest hitter in baseball, along with one other, can't recall who. Kershaw got his third start of the season, (and was the winning pitcher), doing a great job in 7, giving up one run and 4 hits IIRC. His three game ERA is in the 2s.

So I was watching the Giants the other day, at the Reds IIRC, there was a bee swarm delay, and a utility infielder got himself a record, being the second position player in MLB history to pitch a scoreless inning, hit a home run, and steal a base. Sadly, the announcers were discussing a proposed rule that wouldn't allow position players to pitch. They, like me, are NOT in favor of that rule. It takes away from the fun of the game, and would hurt teams in long extra inning games, or blowouts late in the game, or when pitching staff are decimated by injuries and overwork. There was a no-hitter the other day as well. Dodgers are currently the best team in baseball. However, they will collapse either late in the season, or in the postseason. That's what they do. They keep on trying to play moneyball in the postseason, when stats take a back seat to who is hot and who is not.

So I had the opportunity to watch the Yankees on TV, and it occured to me just how formidable they are. Even without two of their biggest stars, they were just dominant in every way. I still don't like them, but you've got to respect their ability and drive.

It's a bit scary just how good they are in their current state.

So...Mike Trout of my local team, the Angels, (when I see a game at the park, it's there, or rarely, Dodger Stadium), made Yahoo News for...making an ERROR! Horror of horrors! How good do you have to be for them to write articles about you making a mistake? For the record, his first error in 2 years. Evidently the guy for some reason has never won a Gold Glove.

They've played literally more than half their games (30 of 50 so far) against the Orioles, Tigers, Royals, Angels, Mariners, and Giants. They might as well have been playing in the California Penal League for as awful as those teams are.

Way I see it, it's pretty early to make too many predictions, except that the Dodgers will collapse either late in the season, or in the postseason or series. And that the Angels will get to the series if they buy tickets. That said, you can get a sense of where they may go. So history and what they're doing so far without some of their biggest stars suggest that the Yankees stand a good chance of being in the mix toward the end of the season. About the post-season, I can make no other predictions save the ones I mentioned. Also, I like the Nats for some reason, and it seems that they're doing quite a bit worse than last year for some reason I can't figure out...

RIP to Bill Buckner, best known for that 1986 Series error that got blamed for costing the Red Sox the series. Thing is, it didn't. The entire rest of that team shares the blame for that, from their pitching staff that couldn't get out, to others who made errors. Of dementia, sadly. Hopefully, he's living in some heaven where he makes the play and hits a walk-off grand slam to win game 7.
