Last week I read Lucifer #6. It was the final issue of the new Vertigo series' first story arc. It's gotten me thinking about how the devil has been depicted in comics.
I'd say, of the big two, DC has been more overt in using the Devil/Satan/Lucifer in their comics. Marvel has used him in the past, but have tended (as with Daimon Hellstrom) to suggest that the character isn't the actual Satan, but is a demonic like being claiming the name. It wasn't until recently in Hellstrom history that it was confirmed who his father actually is, going back to that example. I'd also say that the companies outside the big two have been even more overt is showing a character actually is Lucifer himself.
What uses of the Devil/Satan/Lucifer have the rest of you enjoyed?

I used to like Mephisto.First of the Fallen is also memorable.

The first time I saw him was FF #157 where he was pulling the Surfer and Von Doom's strings. I was a noob in comics back then but it just didn't work for me. From there, whether it be in What if or Defenders, he was just a boar. Even Byrne's use of him in a two-part FF story didn't make me care. I guess I just never 'got' the character and I doubt I ever will. |

Yeah I love Mephisto. Even if I hadn’t already liked him, Nocenti’s DD run would’ve cemented it. A Beer With the Devil is just a tremendous issue.
And I agree that Neron as a character does suck, but he’s a key player in 3 stories I really love: Underworld Unleashed (one of my favorite DC events), Hell to Pay in Flash 127-129, and JLA 6-7 where Zauriel gets introduced. So good stuff can be done with/around him even though he sucks.
