So there's an order for a season three of Kobra Kai, wherein Daniel goes back to Okinawa. To hang out, I guess. That's it, that's all I've heard.

Maybe, but Will Smith is calling the shots, so maybe he'll spring for a few tickets to Okinawa and some hotel bills. It's not like a Game of Thrones thing where they shoot in multiple countries.

It’s not that simple. This isn’t some sort of vlog or podcast. The show it’s basically funded by YouTubeRed which has sponsors themselves. So they have to get permission to film their both by YouTube and Japan. They have to get extra insurance for filming internationally. They also need to pay Japan to film on location and that’s not including scout locations. They need to bring a film crew over plus equipment. That all adds up. If they manage to pull it off then cool. But I really think they are going to pull a ‘Vancouver’ and mostly be a sound stage.

C'mon, like less than 1% of their viewing audience would know the difference anyway. And I'm not sure it would actually add anything, there is nothing on Okinawa they cannot build on a soundstage or film locally.

I at least do know the difference, Okinawa is a tropical/sub-tropical climate zone, really quite pretty in that sense, while Vancouver just looks cold. At least on film. Maybe Daniel could comment ala Austin Powers how funny it is that Okinawa looks nothing at all like Vancouver... And I don't see any of those objections as being fatal, or even unusual. Dollars and the name Will Smith probably can overcome those every time. After all, Japan, and more specifically Okinawa WANT things to be filmed there...and those hotel costs and airfare costs will be there regardless of where they film. And here's a US alternative if they balk at Okinawa---Hawaii. Hell, there are parts of Florida that probably could stand in. What you'd get with Okinawa though is the ambiance. I still see Smith as the real decision maker. The guy who bought the thing for his kid, and shot on location in China. Yahoo isn't going to mess with him IMO; if he wants something, he'll get it.

Jackie Chan was the real reason why Karate Kid happen not Will Smith. He had tons of say in it.

Jackie Chan was the real reason why Karate Kid happen not Will Smith. He had tons of say in it. Well, it seemed to me that Chan wasn't very into the movie, and really had very little to say about it at the time and after. Almost like he preferred people aside from hs accountant didn't know he was in it. And both of Jaden's parents were executive producers on the project. And Will is an ex producer on the series, and is by far the biggest name involved, and likely is the main money man behind it. So he has a large say in production costs, and I doubt Yahoo would gainsay any thing he wants to do, especially a simple shoot in Okinawa. Which really wouldn't cost that much in modern terms for a series that is one of Yahoo's biggest prestige content offerings. As to that Chan movie, I sort of liked it for Chan and the scenery, and of course fight scenes in a movie with Chan are likely to be great. But Jaden Smith...ugh, I hate that guy. No charisma unlike his dad, and his character was no Daniel-san. And...it SHOULD have been The Kung-Fu Kid, or more accurately, The Wushu Kid. I might add that I loved that fight scene where Chan beats up the kids beating down Smith in his imitable fashion, and then at the end, when he's turned away from the defeated kids, he gives that wordless "I'm too old for this shit" look.

Cobra Kai Moving!Probably to either Netflix or Hulu. Google evidently is dropping premium scripted stuff in favor of unscripted shows. Whoever gets it will also get non-exclusive rights to stream season one and two. This is for season three, which evidently is in the can, just waiting to see who wins the sweepstakes.

This show is so much better than it has any right to be, and the continuity and call backs are fucking amazing...

Amusingly, I was right in that bit above; they ARE filming in Okinawa itself. Well, Daniel-san is, along with that new cast member who knew Mr. Miyagi. Good on 'em.
