What do you tell a friend who hasn't read the end but doesn't peruse spoilers, so he has no clue of what to expect and only thinks the series as just alright?

I guess that depends on how your friend feels about Wally West.

So our local library finally got this in trade, so I picked it up because God DAMN was I not going to pay money for it after everything I've read here.
Reading it all in one go, I can get what King was trying to do, but he absolutely did not do it. The art is beautiful, but the story just drags and wanders all over the place. Plus, the monologues were just spaced out really strangely--like, one page worth of monologue stretched out over three or four pages. I literally skipped about half of that caveman guy's monologue where he was quoting other people, and I don't feel like I missed anything. Same with Superman's big speech. There were some good points in there, but reading two or three panels per page was enough to know what was going on.
The other problem is that he never really established Sanctuary very well. Given the importance of the place, it never felt real. There was explanations of how it was made and how it worked, but it never took the time to solidify how it worked other than heroes went into confession booths to talk or into the holodeck to work through trauma. It feels like something that should have been established somewhere and worked into a series or two somehow before this mini began just to give it some weight when things started to go wrong. I know that Zechs made this point in his reviews, as well, but it just seems like a major problem with the whole thing.
Granted, there were some good bits like some of the confessions and Barry running off and reappearing in the Batcave to announce that Booster wasn't on various continents, but the good was lost in all of the bad.
