All right...who ya got for best band? Me, I got Queen! Hard to argue; after all they had both Freddie Mercury the best singer ever, and the only guitarist I know of who's also an astrophysicist, and was Rolling Stone's 6th best guitarist of all time. Plus...they just rocked. That said, there are a lot of great bands, the Stones, Creadence, The Clash, Led Zeppelin…. Still, if you have to pick one, it's very easy to pick Queen. Because in the end, there can be only one...

Zechs told me once that his pick for best band ever was either Asia, or the cast of My Little You-Know-What.

As I said in achille's thread on this topic, it's been and always will be... The Beatles.

And I would counter that group's like Queen would never have come into existence without the Beatles changing music and culture the way they did. I think that is a huge over-statement. I think you young whippersnapper don't know history. - The Beatles were responsible for ushering in: the concept album, the music video, backward masking, stereo recording, the double album, recorded distortion, musical feedback, etc.
- The Beatles wrote and performed their own songs - except for Buddy Holly and folk musicians, that wasn't the norm anywhere. Heck, John & Paul taught Mick & Keith how to write songs.
- The Beatles indirectly put FM radio on the map. Before Hey Jude, FM was 'talk radio'. But because AM stations wouldn't play songs over 3 minutes (Hey Jude is 7:11). A San Fran FM station boasted they were the only ones to play the full song. It caught on and, wham bam thank you Beatles - we have the FM we know today.
- The Beatles inspired so many artists that followed them, including the aforementioned Queen...
- The Beatles were there to put a spark of life back in post-war England.
- The Beatles were there to put a spark of life back in America after the JFK assassination
- Hey Jude helped heal the US after the RFK & MLK assassinations
- Clothes, hair, drugs, rock & roll - if the Beatles were in it, so were millions of others
Don't be so dismissive of the Fab Four, the Beatles legacy isn't a bunch of songs from the 60's - their true legacy is in what and who were inspired from them. And there simply isn't room here to list them all.
