I don't know, Serkis is an outstanding actor when he wants to be. I saw him once on a talk show where he was just becoming his character from the Planet of the Apes reboot movies, and then Gollum, and it was just incredible. I've never seen anything like it.
OTOH, physically, I can't see him as that character yet. The BEST portrayals all have one thing in common; you just like and trust Alfred, and know he'd be better back-up for Batman than anyone. Add to that the way they're going with him as the ex-special forces type (British obviously) which out of all of the actors to play him, I'd say that Sean Pertwee nailed it best, balancing that like and trust aspect with the restrained menace of the spec ops guys, knowing that IF he needs it, he can bring the menace.
Other than him, the cast has me worried for the movie. The chief thing I'm having trouble with is that Pattington just doesn't seem the Batman type. I don't think anyone could be the slightest bit intimidated by the guy, no matter what gravelly voice he adopts. Nor am I convinced he can pull off Bruce Wayne's public face.
I objected to the idea of Joker, but I never had doubts that Phoenix could pull it off as an actor.

Chalk up one more to the list of actors who have played parts in both Marvel and DC movies. These two studios are about as incestuous as medieval European monarchies.
