Too bad, I liked those places. Never bought anything there, but I still liked them.

As a public service, I'm letting you know that you can't celebrate the 4th of July with fireworks at Mt. Rushmore, or you are "celebrating white supremacy" for reasons. This knowledge was shared by the DNC, in a quickly deleted tweet which got a lot of criticism it seems, prompting them to take it down. Do the Democrats hate the 4th of July, fireworks, or a stone grouping of Presidents including Washington, Lincoln, Jefferson, and TR? I'm a bit confused as to which bit is the white supremacist part. Or is it all? Meanwhile, nearly all my local 4th fireworks displays have been cancelled, presumably to show the filthy common people that they're scum to our betters, who hate us. Which has me a bit worried for my dogs, as now all the local idiots will be lighting off all sorts of illegal fireworks, not that they really needed any encouragement, but now they have no choice if they want that sort of thing. Though if we all held a riot and burned down businesses with fireworks, then loot them, it will be okay, since the virus can distinguish between people with good motivations, like rioters and looters, and those with horrible intentions, like those who want to go back to work, or those who want to go to the beach or shop again. It's truly terrifying that COVID is so smart. But its a good thing our rulers know how smart the virus is, and know not to intervene when we want to innocently riot and loot and kill people. BTW, it's now okay again to be dying with things other than COVID; I know because they're running commercials on my local TV telling people they will again respond to say heart attack calls to Emergency Services, when before they'd just let you die if you had that. I'm glad our response to this has been so great on so many levels...

There's the John Wayne thing, which has started to make the national news, but I thought it might be interesting to have a local's opinion. Therefore, I shall interview me, a typical evil genius, (think a younger and shorter and better looking Jeremy Clarkson trying to assemble a car, or indeed do anything). So here's the story:
It began with a ring, the least of rings, but a trifle the Dark Lo...oh, no wait, that's another story. This one began in the late 70s, after Wayne finally checked out of the great bar in the hospital, (another Wayne story I've heard). The board of Supervisors decided to rename Orange County Airport, which IIRC was simply a regional airport at the time, later to become an international airport worthy of a Harrison Ford near miss with a jetliner, after Wayne, who lived about two miles away in the ultra rich movie and TV star enclave of Newport Beach, which has Ferrari, Maserati, Mclaren, Bentley, Aston-Martin, Bentley and Porsche dealerships as every community does. This included putting up a big statue of the man.
Now I'm told it was controversial at the time, with many residents wanting it to be renamed after Eddie West, a local air pioneer. This was in part because everyone back then KNEW very well that Wayne was a huge dick, and not in a lady-pleasing way. He was a very noted drunk and a noted racist; this stuff wasn't a dark secret. He also was a bully, evidently really hitting poor Bruce Dern in a film where Dern was playing the bad guy as he did back then. Dern was maybe 160 soaking wet, with a long distance runner's build. Wayne was 6'4" or so, and about 240 pound, and ex USC football player. So, a bully. The racist part you can read for yourself if you have a mind too; I won't link to anything with the Playboy interview that's got him into trouble. The drunk part...was notorious. I was in the hospital he went to frequently to detox again and again...and the nurse, who was near retirement and had been there in the early 80s and heard the stories of the people who had worked there when Wayne was alive, told me that Wayne used to come there...and smuggle in lots of booze to drink while he was getting better from his latest bender. I don't know if that particular story is true, (she also told me it was a different time, and the hospital, which also allowed smoking in places at the time, sort of winked at that), but there were LOTS of similar stories, so the theme at least was.
So, me, what do you think? Well, me, I never liked Wayne, (though when you watch any of his Western or war movie performances, what you are actually watching is Wyatt Earp, who Wayne actually knew back in the 20s when the iconic old west gunfighter was working as an advisor on Hollywood movies, (silent film star Tom Mix was a friend of Earp's, and as the movie Sunset said, was a pallbearer at Earp's funeral. Wayne at the time was just starting his career as an extra, and he watched and listened to Earp, and copied his mannerisms for his later starring roles). That said, it wasn't the decision of the hoi polloi back then, and it isn't likely to be now, and you know if Wayne is dropped like a hot potato, it won't be Eddie West who gets the new nod.

WTF?!?I can only conclude that much like Kimi Räikkönen, all Finnish people spend their lives in an alcoholic fog, emerging only long enough to win F1 races occasionally. One would THINK, wouldn't one, that it'd be kind of hard to miss that swastika in the middle of your air force logo...

Want to start a pool on how long before Ghislaine Maxwell commits suicide in a cell monitored 24/7 except for when she's "fashioning the noose and hanging herself"?
I'm in at two weeks, maximum. Otherwise she might have time for a plea deal to rat out the others.
