All mantis species make me think of a small alien race secretly living on Earth.

Kinda quick for evolution?
Not really, surprisingly. It turns out that Darwin was partially wrong; sometimes evolution happens very quickly. This was first noted about a dozen years ago on an island in the Med. Something catostrophic happened, (don't recall what), and some lizard evolved in a year or so to meet the new conditions. Evidently sudden catastrophic events that radically alter the local conditions, (like poaching for tusks), can spur very rapid evolution.
