So I was out doing one of my favorite things, hiking to see how many animals I can spot, and I'm very good at that. This time however, I got into real trouble. I was hiking with a friend, and the hike, which I'd never done before, was up and down, a couple thousand feet, and was very rocky, as much climbing as hiking. I started very early, and finished at 4:00 in the afternoon. Fortunately for me, there were a lot of hikers was were very nice, and concerned about me. See, I was suffering from heat exhaustion, and didn't know what I was doing. Wandering around like a drunk. They called park service, who saved me. Yes, it was a rescue. But I did see quail, coyotes, vultures and a western diamond back rattlesnake. Or at least you THOUGHT you saw them.
j/k glad you are okay.

Thanks. I learned a few things. Bring more water or gatoraide, which was what the park service guy suggested. Take trails with some other people on it. Go with a buddy, as I had no idea what was happening to me. And train more for that sort of thing.

Fortunately, I saw those animals before I got that heat illness. The coyote just wandered out onto the trail a few feet in front of me at the start of the hike, took a look at me, and left into the bushes. I guess he had standards. The quails wandered out in front of us, and then ran. We were at a height were the vultures were flying level with us. That, or the were scoping me out as a future meal. And the snake was curled up under a very small bush, rattling away. The funny thing is that about five minutes later, a group of teen girls asked if we'd seen any snakes, and we mentioned it-----the freaked out and went the other way. I don't mess with rattlesnakes, (there aren't that many here and I know what all of them look and behave like), but I'm not afraid of them as they only attack if you mess with them or step to near or on them.
BTW, if you do get a serious bit from one, if you survive and have all you limbs intact, expect a hospital bill well north of $100,000, and in some cases $500,000, with recovery often taking weeks to a month.
