The story sounds bonkers, but...MAYBE it could've worked? I still think Superman Returns is underrated, so I'm not exactly sorry they went in that direction.
Brett Ratner was involved, but went on to direct X-Men: The Last Stand, because Singer walked away to direct Returns. That's kinda weird-slash-funny.
Ashton Kutcher and David Boreanaz were considered for Superman. I think Kutcher was also considered for Batman Begins, and because of "Angel", I figured Boreanaz could've been a good Bats (I remember reading somewhere he was asked about such a role, and he thought it'd be cool). Though it kind of makes sense: Bruce and Clark have swapped places a time or two before...

I honestly think he could have made a great Clark Kent/Superman.

And on the subject of Superman, I have grown to appreciate Brandon Routh's performance in Superman Returns over the years. The dude had an impossible task of playing Christopher Reeve as Clark Kent and Superman, which he performed admirably. It wasn't his fault that the rest of the movie was a dour mess. I, for one, wouldn't be opposed to Warner Bros. giving him another shot.

The way he looks now, maybe he'd be better as Bizarro.
