Frank Miller & Dave MazzucchelliDaredevil: Born Again - The Kingpin finds out DD's secret ID and proceeds to viciously destroy Matt Murdock's life. Ultimately Murdock is 'born again' and comes back better than ever. Batman: Year One - An orphaned child grows to manhood unsure how fight injustice. Meanwhile a good cop fights a losing battle against corruption. The two of them meet and find what both need. Two of the most acclaimed stories there ever were. You must choose one.

Daredevil: Born Again. They are both great stories, but I think Born Again is the best Daredevil tale ever told. Year One is good, but I do not think it is the best Batman story ever done.

I have kind of the opposite feeling. They are both great stories, but IMO, Year One was the greatest Batman story ever, and thus gets the nod from me.

It is interesting though how far Miller has fallen from those and other heights. I wonder what happened?

That's an easy one - Raiders. This was true the moment first saw it back in '81 on opening day. Star Wars was great for a while but I lost all interest once RotJ came out.

It is interesting though how far Miller has fallen from those and other heights. I wonder what happened? My theory... Blue = Good stuff Red = Has been Daredevil (1980), Wolverine (1982), Ronin (1983), The Dark Knight Returns (1986), DD: Born Again (1986), DD: Love and Death (1986), Electra Assassin (1986), Batman: Year One (1987), Hardboiled (1990), RoboCop 2 Movie (1990), Give Me Liberty (1991), Sin City (1991), Robocop vs Terminator (1992), RoboCop 3 Movie (1993), Martha Washington (1994), 300 (1998), Dark Knight Returns (2001), All-Star Batman & Robin (2005), Sin City movie (2005), 300 Movie (2005), The Spirit Movie (2008), Robocop: Last Stand (2013), Dark Knight III: Master Race (2016)
So basically, once he went Hollywood he began to fall.

This really is a tough choice. Both are classics in both story and art. Both are defining stories for the characters. I consider both to be the very best tales for each of them. But one has to edge the other and my (rather mundane) reason for choosing comes down to something I saw when I reread one of them for the umpteenth time. Something clicked in my head as I turn from chapter to chapter in DD: Born Again, and I saw something I never saw before. The opening pages are sequential and sum up the story for each book. For something to surprise me decades after it came out - Born Again barely nudges for win.

The thread commands you to. Well if I must, I must, I guess. I agree with Amoebas, both are defining, both are IMO the very best stories of 2 of my favorite characters. Both have scenes and moments and lines that are etched in fans' heads forever and have been specifically translated to the big screen. But I will disagree by picking Year One, and really for me it boils down to the dual focus on Bats and Jim Gordon. It's as much his story as Bruce's, and for that reason I'll give it the slight nod.

You know, it is funny you mention this, because one of the things I got to thinking about with regard to this question was Born Again is actually the more nuanced storytelling, executing the tale through half a dozen or more characters...characters who are all important to the story. None of them get shorted. Year One is told through only two POVs, Bruce's and Jim's.

We're tied.
A fitting testament to the greatness of both stories.
