So, I broke down and decided to give War of the Realms a try.
Basically, my reaction is it is beautiful to look at and almost completely devoid of much plot.
Now, admittedly there may have been some build up to this story I am simply not aware of. And I am not getting any of the outside series or tie-ins. But so far the plot seems to be the Dark Elves have showed back up and that everyone has decided to slug it out.
Seriously, that is it. Oh, and everyone is obligated to make fun of Spider-Man.
I have watched Looney Tunes cartoons with more plot than this thing has.
The art is beautiful, though.

Yeah, there's been a little bit of build up...Aaron's been running this as a mega-arc for over 5 years now. I'm loving it so far, and I am more than happy to live with Aaron's Avengers book being at its absolute best just mediocre if he can keep this level of fun up for the rest of this event and really stick the landing on his whole Malekith mega-arc. Yeah the plot is thin and it has all your standard familiar paint-by-numbers event beats, but it's epic in all the right ways, more one-liners hit than miss, it's wall-to-wall grand scale action with just enough humanity to make it interesting, and the story is giving Dauterman every opportunity to show off, which he's absolutely doing. I'll take an event that's basically mindless fun like this any day over Marvel's old garbage-ass attempts to "reflect the world outside your door" and/or be "thought-provoking" like the two Civil Wars, Secret Invasion, etc.

It is mindless fun. More than anything else, it reminded me of professional wrestling. It has a lot of the same beats and rhythms.

I think that's an excellent comparison.
