I plan to go over to put flowers at my uncle's grave, (he was a Marine gunny and combat veteran who died years before I was born and saw some heavy, terrible combat), then put on the BBQ and watch a nice Dodger game.

Not meant as a rebuke in any way... but I personally hate the phrase "Happy Memorial Day". It's a day of remembrance for lives lost. It's not New Year's.
I feel like Happy Memorial Day is only about two baby steps up from saying Happy September 11th....

However, another view would be that we're celebrating the lives that were lost, remembering that they were great and the great things they did---which is why we have parades in their honor on that day. It's a great reminder that there ARE real heroes. However, yes, it could be misinterpreted, and this wasn't meant to be.

And I get the whole "celebrating them, honoring them"... but for me personally, I think "happy" added to it dilutes the purpose, sorta.

You know, it's funny, but while I was putting flowers on my uncle's grave at the national cemetery, I got to thinking about what my mom told me about him, (he died well before I was born so I never knew him personally), and he sounds like a bonafide hero. Not in the flashy Medal of Honor way that a few outstanding people show, but in the career Marine gunny who fought in two brutal wars on the front lines of some of the worst combat the US has ever seen...but died of a heart attack at home. Hell, I have the discharge papers--a treasured possession, (which are weird hand-written things from the 1860s for one of my ancestors who was a drummer boy for an Indiana regiment at age 13---HE survived the Civil War, (on the Union side of course)). So...my people have fought in the wars, but go lucky enough to survive them. Sort of drives home the courage that vets showed.
