I am HAPPY! I am watching MLB! Yes, it's a spring training game, but it's still the Braves vs the Orioles, and it is MLB! I figured I might put up a 2020 season thread when the actual season starts in a bit. Bit confused about Joc Pederson...maybe of the Dodgers, maybe of somebody else. My bro told me his trade to the Angels fell through, and I don't see him on their roster. He also just lost arbitration over last season's pay with the Dodgers, so I don't think anyone will want him to stay. He was fifth in the NL last year in home runs per at bat, something like every 12.5 AB IIRC, so he could help the Angels, who are to be charitable, a bit light in the hitting department once you get out of Trout, Rendon, and Otani, with maybe that rookie from last year who was making his pitch for Rookie of the Year before he broke something, a leg I think. Anyone know what's up with Pederson though? Edit: Pederson seems to still be with the Dodgers...but he seems to be injured, (hip), probable for opening day. Maybe the Angels think it is worse than previously thought? Picked up MLB.TV today! Time to start watching some baseball!

Oh noes, someone entirely accidentally hit Jose Altuve on the foot with a pitch! Oh, the humanity! And all those boos!

Argh, I hate it when real life and news items creep into sports, especially one as grim as this, but yeah, it looks like the IOC is considering cancelling the Tokyo Olympics this summer, due to the coronavirus. As we all know, Japan is getting hit harder and harder by this thing, and what with travel bans, formal or otherwise, and people just not wanting to go to crowded events and take a chance...if this thing is still going a couple of months from now, even if the IOC doesn't simply cancel the Games, they probably will self cancel. The IOC however for the moment seems content to punt the decision down the road, but they say that if it's still looking like this or worse nearer to start time, it's toast. Fate of Olympics?

So the big local sports story is Kobe's memorial yesterday at Staples Center. I was kind of shocked to see pop stars managing things like playing "Moonlight Sonata" on piano, (Alicia Keys in a very good rendition if I'm any judge), or singing Ave Maria...but the highlight was a joke Shaq related...he was talking to Kobe about the latter's ball hogging tendencies, reminding Kobe that "there's no 'I' in team", to which Kobe gave the BEST comeback, "but there sure as hell is an 'me' in team"....

Let's check in on everybody's favorite MLB team, the Astros, and see how they're doing in Spring training. Well, it's been five games....and 7 Astros have very mysteriously and unfortunately been hit by pitches. All obvious accidents. I'm sure everyone will agree about that. Mere misfortune, nothing more...

Regardless, it seems like the Astros are going to have to take their lumps. At least it didn't hit Altuve's chest buzzer...

Grow up people.

Tony Romo signed a deal to pay him $17 million a year, a long term deal with CBS. Way more than he was paid as a player, and way way more than he got previously as a broadcaster, (don't feel bad for him, one year for him was basically a lifetime's earnings or more for most people). I imagine for that money, he'll be doing many other things than just football color. Get ready for....dodgeball on CBS 8, the Ocho, Tony!

Hahahaha, ya gotta love Trevor Bauer! Bauer Tells Batter What His Next Pitch Will Be!The punchline being that he got the batter, a Dodger first baseman. And a Cub's player who agreed to be mic'ed up for ESPN for a plate appearance, and gave a running commentary of an at bat......which included a bit where he was puzzled as to what was coming next, and asked, "Can someone BANG for me?", before getting his hit, on a correctly called fastball.

So the virus is hitting sports hard. The Japanese pro baseball league is performing in front of giant crowds of...absolutely no one. Yep, fans can't buy tickets to the games, and the teams are doing their preseason in empty stadiums. Weird to see. There was one a few years back in Baltimore IIRC, during those riots when a single game was played in an empty stadium.
The Grand Sumo Spring basho starts Sunday....again to no fans in the stadium. Sundry football, (soccer to anyone in the US), leagues have been impacted, the Olympics MAY be cancelled, and I wonder about the MLB season. Hopefully, we'll get this, and the world of sports can proceed as it should.
