#663 came out yesterday and...
I, like so many others, jumped for joy that the FF was coming back (finally!). There was some hesitation that Dan Slott was or wasn't the man to do them justice - and then we found out, he was doing a pretty damn good job.
Esad Ribic's artwork was, well, fantastic.
Ben & Alicia's wedding. Doom. Galactus. it didn't just feel like the FF, it was the FF.
And now...
We've had 5 different artists since Ribic left in the last 5 issue (3 just in the latest book which looks as rushed and incomplete). And then there's the last 'origin' arc which is just stupid in plot...
The FF want to finish their first failed mission from the (real) Fantastic Four #1. They succeed and find a planet of superpowered people who fear the FF because of a prophecy their leader, the Overseer, foretold.
1) I can understand Marvel's sliding timeline changing a rocketship to the moon into a rocketship to another planet - but as often as Marvel characters leaves Earth, there's no way this planet wouldn't have been discovered yet, anyway...
The FF try to explain they're not their to destroy their society. Johnny is told he's to love one of these characters and he hardly questions it. Meanwhile Reed figures out the Overseer's secret, that this Overseer rigged the cosmic rays that made the FF the FF.
2) Didn't Slott learn anything when when Straczynski messed with the origin? How does this Overseer origin explain the Red Ghost? The Super-Apes? The U-Foes? Reed's second trip through the Cosmic Rays (FF #200)?
Sloppy artwork and unnecessary retcons. Very disappointing. I hope Slott can turn this around quick. I love the FF; they're what brought me into the four color world, but the series needs more than stupid Wolverine guest appearances.
