The 25 Most Important Batman Stories Ever Told, A CBR Ranking
There are many great Batman stories in the history of the Caped Crusader. Here are the Dark Knight's 25 most important adventures!
There's a reason Batman is one of the most popular superheroes ever created (arguably the MOST popular and successful): the caliber of the storytelling has been top notch for most of the character's 75+ plus years in publication. From his earliest adventures as a masked vigilante with a gun and his many confrontations with the Joker to his adventures with the Justice League and his extended Bat family, there are tons of great stories starring the Dark Knight. Most recently, DC fans have enjoyed the work of Tom King, James Tynion IV and an assortment of excellent artists, as they lead Batman into a brand new era.
Batman's definitely come a long way from Bob Kane and Bill Finger to King and Mikel Janin -- and there are all the adventures in between. Frank Miller, Alan Moore, Grant Morrison, Scott Snyder, Neil Gaiman, Paul Dini, Jim Starlin, Alan Grant, Jeph Loeb, Marv Wolfman -- these are but a few of the great writers who have taken the Caped Crusader in exciting new directions and they're all featured in the list of most important Batman stories below, along with the work of Jim Aparo, Greg Capello, Tony S. Daniel, Brian Bolland, George Perez, Frank Quietly, Tim Sale and many more on the art side. But which of the Dark Knight's tales are the best of the best?
WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE CAPED CRUSADER?
Grant Morrison spent most of 2008 writing the death of Batman. With "Batman R.I.P.," in which Batman suffers unimaginable psychological trauma at the hands of the Black Glove, and then finally pulling the trigger during Final Crisis, Morrison brought Bruce Wayne's story to a temporary end. When it was time to give the Caped Crusader a proper sendoff, DC commissioned Neil Gaiman to pen the story of Batman's wake.
As you can imagine, Gaiman's tribute to the Dark Knight (with excellent pencils from Andy Kubert) is a surreal tale featuring the most infamous members of his rogues gallery. All of the villains (along with some of the Bat's friends) take turns remembering Batman's life and eventual death with differing stories of how the Dark Knight died. In the end, there is no defining story of his death, but we do learn that Batman will die fighting the good fight.
