So Marvel is peddling three $1.00 issues to celebrate Carol Danvers next week. An obvious money grab to tie in with the movie. No big deal, everyone does it. But the three issue they chose to reprint are... Ms. Marvel #20 - a pretty boring issue by Claremont/Cockrum that ends in a cliffhanger so anyone getting it can only guess what happens next. The only significance is the debut of her black outfit. Plenty of better issues in the 24 issue run to have chose from (or even the unpublished #25 that was finally finished in one of those anthologies in the 90's). Avengers #183 is a great issue and yes, Ms. Marvel officially joins the team, but she's barely in this book. They could have gone with Busiek's alcoholism intervention issue - but I can understand why they wouldn't dredge up something that sensitive and personal... ...so they reprint the issue where Carol deals with her rape instead. Reset the Marvel clock.

To me, personally, the most interesting thing that Carol has ever done was have her powers stolen by Rogue so that Rogue could become the Rogue that I remember fondly from the early 90's. That being said, I would like to learn more about the character. Recently I tried reading Captain Marvel Volume 1: Higher, Further, Faster, More because it was free on Amazon Prime reading...I was really underwhelmed. What am I missing?

The best of the modern Carol Danvers stories are in waves from the KSD era. Avenging Spider-Man #9-10 (Fav story from the first half, even though it never got published under Captain Marvel until the recent trades.) Captain Marvel #9-10 (The best story from the second half) Captain Marvel #15 - Really dug this story when I first read it, but unsure how it reads just on its own. (Second half still) Captain Marvel and the Carol Corps was a fun mini, as well.

The original trade had Captain Marvel #17, which is typically considered the story of the KSD era. I don't like it to that extent, but it's one of the highlights from that time in her run.

What you’re missing is that Ms./Capt. Marvel is simply a bit player/good character to have on a team book that has to date had exactly zero truly good solo stories, no matter how hard Marvel has tried to make fetch happen in order to appease the #MeToo movement. Look, don’t get me wrong, I like Carol. I own every issue of her initial solo book. I have checked in and out of all her subsequent solo books to at least try them. I always loved her in the Avengers and as Binary in the Starjammers. I have paid extra for exactly one alternate cover in my life, and it was House of M #2 that was a Carol cover by the Dodsons. But despite all that, the next truly great, or even really good, solo Carol story I read will be the first one. Hell, my favorite “Carol” story ever is the very first Genosha story in X-Men where Carol’s persona takes over Rogue’s body. But there’s nothing wrong with that. Not everybody is a headliner, and some of my favorite characters are team players. But at some point, a character’s A-list push IMO needs to be justified by actually having good stories to tell, not just having a particular demographic really, really want it to happen for you because you check a particular box.

Moreover, she’s essentially a DC character at Marvel, which history has proven just doesn’t really work that well. As initially conceived, Carol never really had a flaw or tragic backstory or really any internal conflict. She came fully formed as uber-powerful and her only struggle was external, with breaking the glass ceiling...problem was that didn’t really work either because she’d already done it! She was an AF pilot and officer, a NASA security chief, a chief editor of a major magazine...the struggle wasn’t really that real.
Since then Marvel’s doubled and tripled down by raping her and taking away her powers, borrowing somebody else’s character flaw by making her an alcoholic, now apparently retconning her mom to be an alien, etc...but they’ve never really, at least IMO, been able to make her a relatable solo character in the framework of how the Marvel U normally operates, beyond just a cool costume (which now is not as cool as it used to be back in the days when it was ok to be sexy) and power set.

Oh yeah, they turned her into space Aquaman.I guess so they could write out Captain Marvel from her backstory. You think they would reprint some number 1s for the occasion.Plenty to chose from in recent years. Whats the score now?Volume 11-12?
