When all Groot could say was, "I am Groot," I remember disliking it after awhile. This was mostly due to Marvel changing his past and his race so that he and his race had always spoken only, "I am Groot," something that made no sense given the character's overall history. Now days Groot is back to talking normally and his past as a normal speaker before the, "I am Groot" stuff is being recognised. The strange thing is that now I find myself missing "I am Groot" a little bit.

I barely read those books outside of the Abnet/Lanning/Giffen stuff and I grew tired of "I am Groot" almost from the start. But then I'm someone who knew the character from before so I was pleased to hear him 'talk' in the latest GotG #1.

I like him better with a 3-word vocabulary to be honest. It gives him something that's uniquely his.

I agree with this and I actually wouldn't have minded the simple three word speech pattern at all if Marvel had left it to just him and kept his past as a normal speaker intact. Like I said in the OP it was the point where suddenly he was treated like he had always talked like that when that just isn't true that I started to get annoyed with it. I especially hated during that period when other members of his race would show up and they all talked with "I am Groot" as well. The stories could still be fun, but I had a constant feeling when reading them like my intelligence was being insulted with Marvel editorial essentially telling me, "You're not going to realize that he once talked normally." tIf they had treated his speech like the recent development to the character that it was it wouldn't have bothered me. In the end they couldn't do that though.

I could be mistaken because it has been a few years since I read the books leading into Annihilation: Conquest but I seem to recall Groot talking normally up until he was blown up during the Star-Lord prelude. When he returned, he simply said "I am Groot." Later, I believe during the War of Kings event, Maximus confirmed that Groot didn't actually say "I am Groot" but that his vocal cords had matured to the point where his speech simply sounded like he was saying "I am Groot" because his species actually possessed a highly advanced form of communication...or, you know, whatever...
