Weird. Wonder what caused the collapse? Well, it was built in the early 80s, in what looks to be just a rebar reinforced concrete slab structure, fairly common. But it's right at the sea, and if it wasn't maintained well, the rebar might have rusted, maybe it was sub-standard construction. In any event, as it appears to be a multiple fatality thing, there's sure to be a big investigation. There's dozens missing. |

A massive, 8.2 earthquake hit offshore at Alaska, triggering a Pacific wide tsunami warning that was quickly lifted for Hawaii, Alaska, and the West Coast. No word on any damage or casualties.

Though there are a lot of wildfires going on, I thought I'd look in on those burning in Sicily. Mostly because THAT one's straight out of a bad episode of the 80s show The A-Team, or really any hour long 80s show.
So what's causing those fires? Not the global warming, no. No, if you guessed the Mafia, you'd be right! And green energy is the cause! 
Well, kind of, sort of. Let me explain. Seems there is a wind energy boom on the island, with vast wind farms being put up with record speed. But to do that, the wind farm owners need...land. Yes, Lex Luthor's favorite investment. But most of the land on Sicily seems to be owned by small farmers, or at least in the windy parts. And they don't want to sell cheap. Or at all. Starting to get the picture? Yeah, the fires are the Mob's way of suggesting to those farmers that it might be better for them if they sold at whatever price the Mob suggested. And as fires do, they tend to get out of control a lot.
It really is the plot of a bad 80s show. A bit funny for me, but I suspect not for those hurt by the whole thing.
Meanwhile, California lost a town to wildfire. Too bad, a lot of historic Gold Rush era buildings there, or there were; they're all ash now.
Lot's of fires in Greece, sea evacs for residents of one of the islands, Athens' suburbs evacuated. Turkey of course has been burning for a while now; they have no air attack on the fires as they retired most of their drop planes without replacing them. Seems like a poor choice in retrospect. And fires staring all over the Balkans.
Many of the fires seem to have been either lightning or arson started.
