Ultraman Franchise's Darkness Heels Project Gets Anime

The opening ceremony of the Tsuburaya Convention 2023 announced on Saturday that the Ultraman franchise's Darkness Heels project is launching an anime.

The Darkness Heels project highlights the dark heroes of the Ultraman franchise such as Ultraman Belial, Dark Zagi, Evil Tiga, Camearra, and Jugglus Juggler. The project has already spawned events, stage productions, and manga.

Tsuburaya Teases School Girl vs. Ultraman Project in Production

The opening ceremony of the Tsuburaya Convention 2023 screened a teaser video to announce the School Girl vs. Ultraman (Joshi Kōsei vs. Ultraman) project on Saturday.

Tsuburaya Productions described the project as a "entirely new human drama with a female protagonist, based on the New Generation Ultraman setting." ("New Generation Ultraman" is the collective name for the Ultraman projects from 2013's Ultraman Ginga series to the ongoing Ultraman Blazar series.) Tsuburaya Productions indicated that School Girl vs. Ultraman, which also has the subtitle "Hollyhock," is already going into full-fledged production.

The Silent Service Live-Action Project Gets 8-Episode Web Drama in February 2024

An eight-episode live-action web drama adaptation of Kaiji Kawaguchi's political military manga The Silent Service will stream on Amazon Prime Video in February 2024, following the 113-minute theatrical feature film which was released in September.

The first six episodes of The Silent Service Season 1: The Battle of Tokyo Bay will stream worldwide exclusively on Amazon Prime Video from February 9, 2024, with the seventh and eighth episodes following on February 16.

The first half of the eight-episode series focuses on more characters from the film's story, including previously unreleased scenes. The second half depicts the Naval Battle off the coast of Okinawa and the Naval Battle of Tokyo Bay, which is a continuation of the film.

Black Jack Manga Gets New Live-Action Series in 2024

TV Asahi announced on Saturday that Osamu Tezuka's Black Jack manga is getting a live-action series in 2024. The series will star Issei Takahashi as the titular character. The company unveiled a visual

The official Osamu Tezuka website describes the manga:

This is a medical drama in which an unlicensed but gifted surgeon, Black Jack, is the main character. Endowed with excellent surgical technique, Black Jack always miraculously saves seriously ill patients and those on the verge of death. But he always claims an outrageous price for his surgery, which is why his presence is rejected in medical circles.

Black Jack lives quietly in a clinic out in the deserted wilderness with his assistant, Pinoko, whose life he had saved. Patients whom other doctors have given up on come to see him every today; he represents their very last hope.

Ultraman New Generation Stars Returns for Second Season on January 27

Ultraman New Generation Stars is returning to Japanese TV with a new season that celebrates the 15th anniversary of Ultraman Zero and explores the history of a new generation of Ultra heroes.

Fūto Tantei Manga Enters 'Last Stage'

This year's sixth issue of Shogakukan's Weekly Big Comic Spirits magazine revealed on Saturday that the Fūto Tantei manga will start its "last stage" in the magazine's next issue on January 15.

The manga is a sequel project for the 2009 Kamen Rider W (pronounced "double") series. Riku Sanjō, a crucial writer for the original series, is in charge of the manga's scripts. Masaki Satou (Love Theory) is drawing the manga.

Toei describes the manga:

FUUTO is under the protection of Shotaro and Philip,
But bizarre incidents continue to occur frequently on the far side of the city.
Tokime, a mysterious beauty, appears and a new evil casts its shadow over the windy city.
It's the beginning of a new battle for Kamen Rider W.

Live-Action Silent Service Series' Trailer Shows New Scenes

The official Japanese YouTube channel for Amazon Prime Video began streaming a new trailer on Friday for Chinmoku no Kantai Season 1: Tokyowan Daikaisen (Silent Service Season 1: The Battle of Tokyo Bay), the live-action sequel series to the live-action film of Kaiji Kawaguchi's The Silent Service manga. The trailer shows new scenes set after the film's story.

The series will debut on February 9 with the first six episodes. Episodes seven and eight will be released on February 16. Amazon's announcement states the work will stream worldwide. The first four episodes will cover the story in the film but also include unreleased scenes not depicted in the film. Episodes 5-8 will tell a sequel story.

In the story, Shiro Kaieda is appointed the captain of Japan's first nuclear submarine, jointly built by Japan and the United States in top secret. However, he and his 76 crew members go rogue in this story that delves into themes of nuclear war, international politics, and world peace.
