Saw it and only liked it. I didn't give a damn about the human side story and while the kaiju got far more screen time than 2014 ever saw, it still wasn't enough (especially for Rodan). My favorite part though was seeing Boston get destroyed.

My favorite part though was seeing Boston get destroyed. Honestly, the first time I saw it the human side story bored me slightly. Second viewing though... {Spoiler} It makes sense now and I liked how it was basically Madison and her mother talking about the plan for the later to unleash the Titans with how many lives will be lost.
It's freaking disturbing as fuck now how casual the talk is. Likewise Madison's mom being like, "Hey you should get some sleep." To her colleagues knowing what's about to happen, but the moment they say no, "BAM!" Literally, they're already dead to her until Tywin literally makes them quite dead.

Some decent Kaiju action, but some idiot still thinks we watch it for "human drama" and not Kaiju carnage. Humans in these movies should be confined to narrating from the sidelines and the occasional reaction shot. And they still use too many CGI cloud effects. Just start having the action in bright daylight and blue skies.

Saw this movie and here are some reflections on it. First off, I liked it. Overall, that is. But yeah, the human crap is always problematic in Godzilla movies; I've really never seen it done right, apart from maybe the original Japanese cut with subtitles. So...next time...well, whenever after Godzilla vs , which is probably already mostly done, maybe more monsters and less people. I liked the fairy teases though. Atlantis or whatever was a bold choice, I approve. I liked that they went a little bit camp, but not too much. Okay, the gripes first. You knew I was going to have some. A minor issue, but annoying, was that the sound wasn't adjusted very well, meaning it was hard to hear the triumphant flourishes of the classic Godzilla theme, or the Mothra theme against the other sounds. Another was {Spoiler} the way Sally Hawkins' character was killed off; Serizawa was always going to be killed off, and he got his Bruce Willis moment at least, but Hawkins ? More classic Toho kaiju please. So....Vera what's her name was the villain of the piece, along with Dance and of course Ghidorah. And...Millie Bobby Brown's character as well. She was fine with killing thousands or millions of people, but draws the line at the end of the world. I hate to break it to WB, but that doesn't make her a hero, but rather a raving genocidal lunatic like her mom, only to a lesser degree if you care to draw lines anywhere. The dedication at the end to the two people involved in the Toho G movies was a nice touch. All in all, I thought it was a movie made by a guy who was more of a fan of the Godzilla movies; imperfect certainly, but it had some heart and felt a lot more like a traditional Godzilla movie than the 2014 thing was.

I didn't mind what happened to one character's fate. {Spoiler} Sally Hawkins' character getting gobbled up in the snow and eaten by Ghidorah's middle head was shocking. On my second viewing, I noticed how much thinking that middle head was doing and always nudging the right head to stop fooling around.
There was no mistaken that this Ghidorah was truly a King of Terror who relished in the harm it caused humans. Again look at the moment in Boston when it arrives and finds Madison. It could blasted right then and there but it waited so SHE WOULD KNOW what was about to happen.
That also doesn't excuse what Madison did, but she kept trying to talk her mom out of it in the beginning of the movie. Their dialogue pertained to asking her mom if this plan would actually work. That her father would survive this (given he's far away in the wilds). Even the mom did this, to a lesser extent asking one co-worker to get some sleep. Knowing that Tywin was going to come calling soon. But they said no, and bam she kept going. Really some cold ass shit on her part. Still, no matter what Vera's character was the real monster in this. Remember she even told her several times, that she prepped her for this. And she stands balked at being called a monster? GEEZ! You literally had your daughter walk over the remains of coworkers and innocents! If not for Ghidorah being, "WILD CARD BITCHES!" you would have literally been the true monster of the movie.

Just start having the action in bright daylight and blue skies. It's obviously what vs. Godzilla will be given that... {Spoiler} The action will be taking place on Skull Island. But I enjoyed the fact that King Ghidorah literal presence caused natural disasters in hurricane-like weather was a nice touch expanding on what Grand King Ghidorah did in the Rebirth of Mothra III.
Likewise, Legendary Ghidorah using Grand King's ultimate attack of EVERYTHING ON ME IS LIGHTENING BITCHES!! When Godzilla was owning him early on in the final fight.

Eh, I didn't really mind that first; thematically it made sense, putting Ghidorah over as a heel. As to the second though, I stand by it; they both were monsters. Kid knew she was complicit in mass murder even under the best circumstances. BTW, the best part for me was the post credits thing about the monsters healing the Earth, thus proving evil mom right.

Sadly, KotM seems to be doing pretty poorly with only about $49 million in US opening box office. The overseas BO helps a bit, but it's still a $200 million movie with another $100 in marketing costs to recoup.

The overseas BO helps a bit, but it's still a $200 million movie with another $100 in marketing costs to recoup. I'm not surprised. You had it competing against Rocketman and Aladdin. Also critics were tearing this movie to shreds. The movie is facing an uphill battle to say the least. However, it hasn't been released in Japan yet either. The movie will make it's money back, but it won't surpass or the original (which had really no competition when it was released). It still won't be a bomb, unlike another movie that'll be out this week.
