All right. Before either movie actually hits the theaters, which one do you think will do better?

I think both will do well, but Captain Marvel has all of the momentum of the Marvel Cinematic Universe behind it while Shazam feels like a more solo film. I think that'll drive Captain Marvel to higher attendance numbers.

I think that'll drive Captain Marvel to higher attendance numbers. My thoughts exactly. Sure, there was that whole "she punched an old lady, she didn't smile" nonsense which...yeah, was anyone actually "up in arms" about that crap?...but Marvel's got a decent rep where the movies are concerned. The best the Big Cinematic Red Cheese has is that the DC flick right before it was actually well-received. It might've lost a few die-hard DC movie fans that are upset the trailers had some levity and didn't involve decapitations. It's possible there'll be a surprise upset and Shazam might make AS MUCH as Captain Marvel, which would...actually be kind of hilarious.

It is hard to argue against the Marvel Cinematic Universe...but somehow this one feels to me like it might be the first underperforming Marvel movie.

Well, I am not claiming I think it will do poorly (I am not, for example, one of those who thought Man of Steel or Batman v. Superman: Dawn Of Justice were flops; they both did way too much box office to be considered that.) But it does not feel like it is going to capture the public's attention quite like SHAZAM does to me. But I freely acknowledge this is just a feeling I have at the moment.

I'll judge this by what my kids think - and they're waiting for SHAZAM.

Well, the Marvel effect will give it a big boost, as will the tie-in to Avengers 78, but in the end, I think it will come down to how the respective leads come across.

The idiots who are trying to tank Captain Marvel's rating on aggregator sites like Rotten Tomatoes are going to end up indirectly helping it. Nobody wants those assholes to "win."
Plus it is the lead in film to Avengers: Endgame, it introduces the Skrulls, and it is Marvel's first female-led entry into the MCU.

If the Brie Larson who phoned it in for shows up, that's probably the best chance the DC movie has to win. All she really has to do is show up and act like she cares, and I think that movie will win.

Why does one have to win and one has to lose? Can't they both be enjoyable?

Why does one have to win and one has to lose? Can't they both be enjoyable? They can and hopefully will, but the issue IIRC was which will pull in more box office, and the answer is obvious....The Wandering Earth! Which....sounds interesting. I suppose I can Netflix it, seeing as how they bought the international rights. $610 million in two weeks in China isn't bad.
