So the early reviews for Shazam are in, and they seem to be overwhelmingly positive, basically calling it the best of the DCEU movies, which to be fair is like calling someone the world's tallest dwarf. But...one also calls it the sunniest and sweetest DC comic book film since the 1978 movie Superman. That's a bit higher praise. IIRC, it currently at 95% on RT. However, it will still be dogged by the massive failure of the DCEU as a whole, especially it's tent-pole movies like BvS and League. Wonder Woman probably IMO got a huge boost just from not totally sucking, despite the fact that in reality, it was really only a "meh" movie at best, with a lead who can't act, a male lead who overacted, and terrible bad guys and a junk third act. Shazam probably won't do the business Captain Marvel is doing for that reason, and for the fact that it doesn't tie in to a hugely anticipated movie, thanks to DC's squandering any goodwill they had with League. Honestly, while from all accounts Marvel wasn't a bad movie, just a competent outing in the MCEU, Shazam sounds like it's probably a better movie on its own merits, if the reviews can be trusted. But again, do to those considerations, it probably won't do as well. If it is that good though, I really hope it does well enough to justify making more of them to continue the work Aquaman and WW started at rehabilitating the DCEU. On the downside, with WB continuing to make movies that will likely be more old DCEU than new, like that Harley Quinn vehicle BOP, and however many Joker movies they're planning, it will still have to fight against more screwing up by WB and DC.
In the UK it is being marketed as a kids comedy movie, rather than an outright superhero movie (I think people expect DC Superhero movies to be all dark and gloomy and serious, even with the change in Aquaman, which is why they are doing that), so I don't see that helping its numbers here. Is it being marketed like that in the US too?

That's another problem compared to Captain Marvel; it's barely been marketed here. We have access to trailers, but apart from a few commercials, I haven't seen much. What there is seems to market it as a superhero comedy, but in a bit more old fashioned way.

Captain Marvel crossed the one billion mark. If Shazam were to even match (let alone surpass) that, it'd be the first DCEU movie to achieve the box office milestone that Marvel's already done a couple of times.
I don't really care about which movie does better. I'd just find it funny if their first movie to break $1 billion were also one that, by all accounts, abandons the standard "edgy-gritty-dark-so-cool-to-middle-schoolers" tone that so many die-hards were convinced was "vital" for them to have "their own voice" or whatever rationalization they're using now.

Has it made the Billion? Cool, I'm glad to have been wrong about that too. If this can finally convince DC/WB that the future is one with positivity and fun then I am all for that. This is good news.

Actually, the bolded letters are a link to Box Office Mojo's page for Aquaman, THAT'S what hit $1 billion. I put it in bold because the normal link setup for ProBoards is a little too easily missed.

Yeah, it does not look like SHAZAM is going to get anywhere near that...which is too bad as it is an entertaining movie.
