And saving the best for last, tribute to my favorite Marvel writer of all time: J. M. DeMatteis
i mentioned earlier his DD run, which was fairly short and doesn't do much for me, but basically everything else he touched at Marvel over the years was gold.
my favorite Cap run of all time, with Deathlok, the debut of Jack Monroe as Nomad, the rise of Baron Helmut Zeno and the debut of Vermin, and his Red Skull magnum opus, which remains my favorite Red Skull story ever Kraven's Last Hunt -- 'nuff said (although the Soul of the Hunter sequel was great too) the very best stuff from the dreaded Clone Saga, including the classic death of Aunt May in ASM 400 my favorite Defenders run, highlighted by the Six-Fingered Hand epic the IMO best solo Spidey stuff ever (short of the OG Stan/Steve/JRSr stuff) in his PPTSSM run, especially the Vermin and Harry stuff
And lastly, my hands down favorite run of my all-time favorite Marvel book, Marvel Team-Up; you want high comedy? Check out his team-ups with Thor, Valkyrie, the Torch, or Frog-Man. Want insightful statements on aging? Check out #119 with Gargoyle or 120 with Dominic Fortune. Want a pure dissertation on who Peter Parker is and why he's great? See 127 with the Watcher or 129-130 with Vizh and the Witch. Every issue in the run with maybe 1 or 2 exceptions is legit great, and none are bad.

To be fair to John Byrne, since I was just bashing his run on West Coast Avengers, I will say that there were things he did that I did like. The top of those for me would be the first 12 issues of Alpha Flight. That first year of stories was just amazing. Alpha Flight went more than 10 year in total in its first volume, but looking back, I don't think it ever managed to match the quality of that first year again.

The weird thing about that is that the team was only actually together for like 3 of those first 12 issues

And really, WCA was Byrne's only Marvel "miss" for me in terms of writing. Well, Spidey too, but that was the late 90s and the less said about that the better. But FF, Alpha Flight, She-Hulk, Namor...I love all those.

The weird thing about that is that the team was only actually together for like 3 of those first 12 issues Well yeah, it was still really good though.

Another all-time nostalgic favorite is Ultimate Spiderman.I realize nobody likes Bendis now,but he was good back in the day. His Daredevil is also great. Other randomness: Garth Ennis' Punisher Rick Remenders Punisher Nicieza/Loeb/Moore X-Force PADs X-Factor Busieks Avengers Avengers Forever Mantlos Hulk

TBF he had some good stuff. I gave his early Alias a try and I admit, it wasn't that bad. Daredevil grew so freaking monotonous that I dropped it fairly quick. I was actually giddy with joy to hear he was coming to Avengers to replace the horrific Chuck Austen. His 1st issue looked good artwise but puzzling in actual story. By the time he had Hawkeye stupidly commit suicide and Wanda go crazy, I recognized Bendis for what he is/was... Shit. The only dime he's ever gotten from me since was his cut of Action #1000 (which was purchased for all the other contributors). This isn't to say I don't read him occasionally in the store (many times laughing at him - "No more mutants - except for all those mutants that make Marvel money" "He killed Black Panther, the most graceful and acrobatic hero in the MU, by making him trip!?", etc.)(many times loathing him - "Hawkeye talking about killing someone" "Lois and Clark just up and let their 10 year old son leave the planet with a man who is effectively a stranger", etc.) If he played outside of continuity, I'd probably like him more (minus the non-stop street/teenager/Oi speak). But in continuity, Bendis has always been one to take his square story and forcing it through a round hole to meet his ends. And that, imo, is shit.

So today's the first day of the new site being on my screen at work during lunch. And BAM! The size of those pictures basically screams "NERD ALERT" to anyone passing by.

Avengers Disasembled was a load of crap, noone is arguing that. But Ultimate Spiderman was good.It was kinda weak by the end and then they killed Peter. 🙄
