Currently hurricane Hilary is reported to be a category 3 hurricane of the coast of Central America (forecasts look like it might get stronger before weakening again). It is supposed to hit California in a few days as a tropical storm. Hopefully it does weaken as planned. Good luck folks. www.wunderground.com/hurricane/eastern-pacific/2023/hurricane-hilary

Yeah, it's the first tropical storm to hit CA in my lifetime and vastly more. Since 1939 in fact. That one killed about 50 people IIRC. I'm quite excited, since I look to be right in the very eye of the storm on the tracking. Maybe I should go surfing....
Or maybe not, perhaps I will just stay home, off the roads, and try and keep my gradually collapsing house from quickly collapsing. And look after my neighbors. Wish though we could have sent some of that rain Hawaii's way during the fire.
As for us, I just expect what we normally get, lots of flooding and mudslides, plenty of swift water rescues, plus tornadoes and perhaps an elevated number of deaths. We simply aren't set up for anything like that.

Good luck. I hope you are spared anything serious. Some rain is good but…

Well, I can confirm that I'm not dead. I think. Maybe. But not because of the storm, anyway. For me, it was an average winter storm in summer, only warm and never actually raining hard, just constantly. I probably got less rain from it than a winter storm. No wind either, though the storm clouds moved faster than I've ever seen them, must have been really blowing up there.

Did you feel the hurriquake?

Actually, no. It was pretty far away and not very powerful by our standards. I don't know why they even mentioned it...

Oh dear, the Morroco quake is pretty terrible. Despite being what I'd call a minor quake, it has killed over 2,000 people so far, which looks to go much higher. I've seen the damage; it's obvious they don't build to any standard that can resist even small quakes. Where I live, this would have broken objects that fall off shelves or whatever, with no injuries or deaths, because we have high building standards, which are enforced. I hope the best possible for them, but it looks very grim.
On a somewhat better note, the missing in the Maui fires are way down, to 60 something, rather than the over 1,000 we saw initially. Even better, the death toll has stalled now, at an already far too high 115.

One to watch for…
Hurrican Lee, currently a cat 3, will pass near Bermuda, and is expected to get close to the Northeast USA (eg. Boston) later in the week (possibly as a cat 1)…
Also, though not expected to hit the USA at this point, is another hurricane, Margot
Two more systems are brewing in the Atlantic, but aren't storms yet.

An either 7.4 or 7.6 quake hit the west coast of Japan. Tsunami warning in effect for the area.
